"The Big Mama tomato is the best tomato I have grown. It is excellent in sauces. I use a pressure canner and the Big Mama has just the right amount of juice and not that many seeds. We only grow about a dozen plants each year and the yield is out of this world. The plants are easy to care for and produce a tomato that is uniform in size, taste and texture. Burpee has devoped a great all around tomato. We also use it in salads and on sandwiches and burgers. Great job Burpee!"

""Big Mama" has replaced other plum tomatoes in my garden! I have won several blue ribbons at our agricultural fair in the plum tomato category with the beautiful tomatoes that Big Mama consistently produces. I have found the fruit to be quite uniform as well. Nothing compares to having home-made spaghetti sauce in January from the loads of wonderful flavored tomatoes harvested in the summer from these incredible plants! The tomatoes are great eaten in a salad or used in cooking- I really love this variety!"

"Big Mama is absolutely the best plum/paste tomatoe I have ever grown. The size is several times larger than any of the other varieties I have tried and remains consistent through the season. The fruits were blemish free and the plants were disease free. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it makes a fabulous all purpose tomatoe for sauce, slicing, salads and soups. Big Mama has a good flavor and it produced prolificly until the first hard frost. The frost survivors had no problem ripening on my counter and kept very well. My search for a worthwhile plum/paste tomatoe has ended. But now another search for a "favorite" will begin because of all the new found space in my garden plot! "

Choice Tomato,
January 25, 2010 Submitted byHomegrower from Lake Cumberland, KY
"Started growing Big Mama Hybird four years ago for salsa. Plants grow and produce in very poor soil and hot summer time temperatures when other varities fail. After using Big Mama for fried green tomatoes and for the table last year, it has become our favorite. Taste is great (ripe and green) and the size fits on plates, frying pans and sandwiches. The only problem we have is the ripening process. Seems they all get picked for frying before getting ripe. Plan on planting additional plants this year to correct the riping process.."

Wonderful tomato!,
January 8, 2010 Submitted byMomMackGardens from Northwestern Ohio
"Burpee.... you hit the mark with Big Momma! This large, firm tomato is perfect for making paste, pasta sauce or even diced tomatoes. This tomato has very few seeds and lots of 'meaty' pulp under a thin skin that is very easy to remove. I'll never plant a Roma tomato again.... Big Momma is all I need!"

Great paste tomato,
January 6, 2010 Submitted byloralkid from central California
"I make ketchup and tomato sauce every summer. I have a terrible time with blossom end rot, but these tomatoes were perfect, no end rot, each fruit was approx 8 oz each. Easy to pick as well, all my friends say that my ketchup and tomato sauce was fantastic this year, and it was due to Big Mama."

Will be my only canning tomato,
January 2, 2010 Submitted byGardengirl52 from Near Augusta, Maine
"Because of the terrible weather in spring and summer 2009, I'm not sure if these tomatoes performed at their very best. The yield was only fair, but flavor and texture were great. I canned and froze, because I didn't have enough at any one time to make sauce even with 8 plants. Germination was 30 out of 30 seeds. Am buying these again and hoping for a better growing season in 2010."

"I was very disappointed w/ the stock I received this year. My Big Mama plants arrived w/ brown spots on the leaves and 6 of 12 died after planting w/ in a few days of planting. In the past I have had good luck w/ these Romas, tho this year, I'm re thinking my plant purchase for next year."

Awesome!,
March 14, 2009 Submitted byGardenAngel from Lemon Grove
"These tomatoes were even better than advertised. All of them were over 8 oz. Most weighed over a pound. Two of these easy to peel tomatoes made a pint of diced tomatoes. From 8 plants I harvested enough to can 60 pints, for our family to have fresh tomatoes every day, and I gave away tomatoes every week. They are still producing in March (of course, I do live in "The Best Climate on Earth")"

Best Canner by Far,
March 1, 2009 Submitted byAelsa from Columbus, OH
"First canned this tomato in 2006, plants my sister grew for me. Wonderful yield, low-maintenance, and no blossom end rot when another variety had that problem--thick clay soil in my area, constantly amending my soil. This plant grew well, and canning was so easy compared with my Roma VF. A lot of meat, small seed cavity. A dream to work with. Great flavor."

Severe Blossom End Rot,

Over sold, at least IMO,
October 27, 2008 Submitted byPeonyguy from Massachusetts
"I wonder if I just had a bad tomato year. So many people seem to love Big Mama, but I found it to be very average. As compared to an old reliable like Roma VF, it was not much bigger, yielded way less, and tasted no better. It has higher moisture than some other roma types, making it less desirable for sauce, but it does slice well. I have some seed left, and will try it again, but only as a novelty, and only a few plants. I'd love to grow some Big Mamas like the ones in the picture, so I'll keep trying."

Best in Class,
August 24, 2008 Submitted byLakeErieGarden from Lorain, OH
"Of all the paste tomatoes I have ever tried, it will be hard for Burpee to top this one. Maybe, Jersey Devil is better flavor, well it is but this tomato packs plenty itself. I now think this is the best paste tomato out there for overall flavor, appearance, production and SIZE. I do not want to understate what a fine quality eater this is, much better than your average Roma. I can't come up with a negative. Maybe it could ripen a little earlier but even then, my other heirloom paste tomatoes don't ripen until late, late August and early September and so in comparison this is much better. This is going to replace all other paste tomatoes in my garden."

Best sauce tomato!!!,
August 17, 2008 Submitted byCJJo from Naperville, IL
"We were looking for a large plum tomato to make our sauce making easier. We found the tomato, Big Mama. I'm sorry that other customers did not have our success. We had large, perfect tomatoes. We grew 8 plants and this past weekend harvested about 100 tomatoes. We made sauce, used them in fajitas and had them on a salad. We were really impressed. These meaty tomatoes had less seeds and lots of meat. We will grow more plants next year."

Fave Tomato,
August 13, 2008 Submitted byCorni from Cincinnati, OH
"Ditto on all the awesome reviews this tomato has received. It's my favorite growing, tasting and cooking by far. I usually only grow them in my garden, but this year I put one in a container just for kicks. As long as I water it every other day, it does fine. And the container forced the fruit to ripen at least a week earlier than those in the ground. I'm going to do that even earlier next year so I can enjoy a few tomatoes sooner."

Not For Self-Watering Container,
August 6, 2008 Submitted byRobert3son from Monmouth County, NJ
"I tried these plants for the first time and was extremely disappointed. I planted 2 plants in a very large self-watering container and as of 8/6/08, have picked only 3 edible tomatoes which were half the size as advertised. The rest(4-5 dz) were discarded due to severe blossom end rot. Although growing tomatoes in containers is more susceptible to BER, I've never experienced anything this bad. Never Again"

Little production and blossom end rot,
July 7, 2008 Submitted byCoralB from NC
"Like some of the other reviewers I have had problems with leaf curl and very bad blossom end rot. I have 12 other plants in the garden and all but one other is doing fine so I do not think the BER is due to watering or calcium definiciency. The few tomatoes I have managed to salvage, however, do have a nice sweet taste. Unfortunately my plant was very low yielding and the tomatoes have not been nearly as large as the photo suggest (really the size of a large roma)."

By far the best tomato plant!,
June 27, 2008 Submitted byBavaria from Bear, De.
"This is the second year for growing this tomato plant from seed, only this year I grew 27 plants. Last year 6. Great taste, my wife and I jar sauce and salsa with home grown hot peppers. This plant cranks out huge numbers . Had some leaf curling but not a concern. Strong stems and with mulch very little watering. Low mantaince except for support during high winds. Burpee has the blue ribbon on this tasty tomato."
