Excellent Tomato, August 10, 2007
Submitted by plntluvr67
"Loved growing this tomato. It was a very prolific producer. This is the first roma type tomato with such a large size. I always love to order the plants because things move much faster when you plant them. This tomato is excellent for using to make sauce with. This tomato will be on my list for next year!"

Very disapointed, August 10, 2007

"I really had high hopes for this tomato, but plants had leaf curl, starting a few weeks after they were planted and a lot of tomatoes with end rot. I planted supersteak and big boy and they were beautiful, no problems. They were all planted in the same area with the same care and watering. I think these are more prone to problems than other types of tomatoes."

Highly recommended, August 10, 2007
Submitted by CandyK from East Haven, CT
"This is a GREAT tomato. They are huge, meaty, few seeds and delicious. I planted two of these in pots and 10 in the garden. The ones in the pots went outdoors on May 1st, the ones in the ground went in a week later. All the plants are loaded with fruit. We were picking tomatoes from the pots the last week of July and the ones in the ground the 1st week of August. I will definetly plants these again next year."

"Purchased these last season and WOW! Our summer was hot and dry, with temps hitting in the 100+ everyday. With minimum maintenance, these plants were putting out fruits that weighed 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound! Very tasty and hearty. Stored very well with freezing and canning, kept their shape without turning to mush. Tomatos retain their sweet flavour throughout processing, but had a really hard time keeping the kids out of the garden and eating these right off of the vines! Got them on my list for this years planting, and next years, and next..."

"I discovered it is best to leave this tomato on the vine until completey ripened as the flavor
is enhanced and do not find any green seeds
when canning them. I really like this tomato for canning as the fruit is twice as large as other paste varieties, is easy to peel and most important is very meaty. As with all tomatoes they cannot be planted in the same place in the garden every year. Big Mama has large, healthy vines and have never had mold, rot or any other problems with the vine or the tomatoes. Have not experienced end rot even though we have had wet weather when ripening. Microbes in the soil along with good drainage make a big difference in how the plants and fruit grow and mature."

"Unfortunately we had a very wet summer last year. These tomatoes have a little point at the end that tended to hold drops of water. Then the tips would rot and ruin the whole fruit while it was still green. But, the ones I could bring inside and bag-ripen were great! Firm and meaty, very few seeds, a little milder tasting than other tomatoes but still very good. I made some great salsa with them! Overall they were good tomatoes but i would be cautious about trying them if you have a very wet climate."

"Big Mama is wonderful and I have used it for salsa, diced tomatoes, sauce and even stewed tomatoes. Scalds and skins easily for any of the above uses. Seed cavities are well defined so seeding for salsa and diced is easy.Picking is easy. Needs room as is big plant.Ripened right up to frost. Gets two green thumbs up from me."

"The size of these plum tomatoes is incredible! They produced well during a poor tomato season, and I will grow them again. They were firm and blemish free and although not as tasty as the smaller plums, still had a good flavor."

"This was the first year I've tried them after moving to North Carolina. We had lots of rain this summer, but no disease. I did use Serenade fungicide a few times. These keep producing, easy to skin and makes wonderful sauce and slicing for salads. My new paste favorite!!!"

"Big Mama is an outstanding paste tomato. We greatly enjoy the heavy yields and the ease of making pizza and spaghetti sauce that we will enjoy all year round. The tomatoes are okay sliced for sandwiches and salads, but other varieties such as the brandywine varieties are far tastier. Big Mama fills our need for a paste tomato in its uniform and meaty texture. I find this grows best when firmly staked at least 3 to 4 feet apart. It grows quite large (over 6' high) when given the chance."

"The plants were spindly and leaves turned brown. There seemed to be a lot of end rot. I tried 6 plants and didn't get enough to make salsa. Thank goodness all my other plants did well. I planted 5 kinds of tomatoes and all did well except Big Mama. I will them next year to see if they improve but I will not plant very many."

"These are the biggest romas you will ever see. They grow 3 to 4 in a bunch and are 4-5" long and 2-3" wide. I swear. Very meaty with little pulp. Makes canning a snap compared to smaller romas. No blemishes or disease. HIGHLY RECOMMEND."

"I purchased the 4-pack sampler. The Big Mama did the worst of all 4. It became riddled with disease from day 1. The leaves turned brown and shrivelled. The few fruits it produced were mottled, misshapen, and tasted bad. The Health Kick Hybrid and 4rth of July varieties did OK. The Burger Buster also did poorly. I will not plant the Big Mama again. In fact, after nursing them for 3 months, I gave up and pulled them out."

"We have a standing order with a Burpee store for 20 Big Mama plants and this year nothing came to the store , which would be left overs from the cataloge. The manager gave us a few plants of her own Big Mama's that she had grown. The Burpee book says , Sorry! they are not available. There seems to be a Big Demand for Big Mama's! They are great!" I use them to make my Tomato Sauce for the entire year!"
