What a giant, June 4, 2009

"My mammoth's grew to 12 feet tall. Out of a dozen un-staked plants, only one was damaged by the wind. Easy and quick to grow!"

sunflower mammoth, August 10, 2008
Submitted by tuxedocat from Clinton, MD
"Although I did purchase sunflower mammoth seeds that are labeled Burpee, This is the first time I ever planted sunflowers. The thrill of it was fantastic and very gratifying. The plant got approx. 11foot tall. But, because we have had a lot of 90 degree/humid days here, the sunflower head has been drooping and the surrounding yellow leaves are dying off. I thought maybe it was the temps but, maybe it could just be a disease or some kind of wilt."

Mammoth Sunflower, August 9, 2008
Submitted by mjk08 from Franklin Square, New York
"Easy, to grow. I planted twelve sunflowers for the first time ever and did not realize that these are Mammoths and should be planted two feet apart in order to ensure good growth, so I had to relocated about five of these sunflowers plants (when they were about 3ft tall) to another area in my garden (the replanted ones are not pictured though), and I am happy to say they all survived and are also growing very big. As for my main sunflower garden one the plants (third from the left) is sprouting about 10 blubs, all over all I still can't believe I got all this from seeds!"

great grower, July 20, 2007
Submitted by wilbar
"i planted mid may and the largest of the bunch is 5'tall july 20.
almost every seed germinated, they transplanted well, and are growing like crazy, even in the sand and southern red clay.
I planted them all around my vegetables and flowers, being careful not to block their sunlight, and they have made the most lush backdrop for my landscape that already adds so much depth to my displays, and they haven't even bloomed yet.
I am very anxious to see how many mature to bloom."

"Plants grow well, but animals such as squirrels and chipmunks eat them if you plant them straight into your garden. So i find it easier to start them inside in peat pots. If you plan on planting them you should go to your local garden shop and buy some 99 cent stakes, they break/bend easily."

"I've been growing these beauties for years. Each sunflower has grown large beautiful flowers that produce many seeds. The stalks are a few inches in diameter, and once dried make fine trellises. You can leave these sunflowers over winter and wild birds will happily eat the large seeds. Some plants have reached 15 feet and the flowers have been over a foot wide. I've gotten many compliments on them and recommended to beginning gardeners."

"I started gardening last year and planted these sunflowers straight into my garden... This year I started them inside because the birds ate many of my seeds last time...
I only had 6 flowers grow but even then they made an impact; neighbors stop to ask how I get them to grow so big... traffic slows down when people drive by. I will plant more this year. In the back you can also see some marigolds, which also grew with no care at all, just rain water."

Perfect for Florida Gardens, July 2, 2006

"These beautys can handle the sandy and acidic soils of Florida. I gre them in many different gardens across NE Florida to find all the burpee sunflower seeds planted to have a similar general effect- great beauty. The Mammoth Russians are my favorite as they have the most seeds (yum!) and they grow tallest. Being very windy at times though can weather these flowers and you might need to stake them with a 99cent stake from a local garden center. Have fun planting!!!"

"Can
be weak growers at first, plant inside in peat pots and then transplant
them into an area that gets more than six hours of sunlight each day.
Water them in the morning when the sun is not beaming directly down on
the flower (same effect as watering grass mid-day). Plant them where
the roots can spread out. Some advice DON'T TOUCH THE FLOWERS. I did
that, and the stems broke and I had to start again. Great, big
beautiful blossoms and make many seeds. Good Luck. Great for beginners"

"I planted these seeds outside but unfortunately...they never grew. I tried again, but this time...I planted them inside and within two days, they had already grown...I recommend planting them inside first. I planted them in soda cans...and i watered them everyday."
