Best Yeild Ever!,
August 16, 2007 Submitted bywilbar from Clayton
"Normally I plant seedlings. This year I tried starting from seed and could not be happier with the results. I used two different methods. For the first , I bought two big pots and threw a handfull of seeds into each one.I had many sprouts but they were overcrowded. They grew so big that I used them ornamentally. As for the second,I germinated single seeds. Then I planted them two feet apart in the garden. The single plants each grew to be bigger than the entire pots of Basil, far exceeding my expectations. I love basil and consume much of it.If it's not picked right,it won't taste as good or yeild as much. The best tasting leaves are the new ones on top of the plant.I pick them when they make a "star"formation .These must be picked before they flower or the plant will stop growing as fast, and will make more seeds than leaves. The more stars I pick, the more my plants bud. The stars that i cannot eat go in the freezer, vaccum packed and last me most of the winter. The other leaves I consider suckers.I don't eat them unless they look very good(green, thick and wrinkled)or I am desperate for leaves for my pesto. Japanese Beetles were the main pest. Nothing else seemed to bother them as long as they got some water . This has been my best year ever!"

Great Seeds,
April 27, 2009 Submitted byflooze
"This basil started quickly with lots of propagation and little effort. Within 8 weeks we were harvesting to enjoy and promote prolific growth, which did happen. An easy herb to grow all year long in a sunny spot to always have on hand for fresh or very fresh dried product."

Mainstay Herb,
April 18, 2009 Submitted by7im8 from Fountain Hills
"Another mainstay herb. Planted from seed, indoors, in very fine soil. Rather than cover with 1/4 inch of fine soil, I just sprinkle the seeds on top of the dirt, and then water them in with a watering can. More seem to come up that way, and grow faster, at least for me.
Great flavor, grows well. Mostly used for great red sauce with some of the greek oregano.
Can't take any chill, or it will die off. Don't set this one out too early."

Wonderful Scent,
March 7, 2009 Submitted byGardenGirl88 from Twin Valley, MN
"I was so busy with the rest of my garden, I never got the chance to make my pesto this year. Despite that, whenever I was in the garden, I gave the basil a brush to tease my senses and make my work more enjoyable. Even as I cleaned out my garden at the end of the season, I could smell the dried basil on the plant and made even that last work better.
These were easy to start in the garden, and produced huge plants for me. I only wish I could have used them for more than smelling!"

Great Basil,
December 2, 2008 Submitted byRhazz from Salt Lake City
"Seeds started easily inside. I had some transplant shock but plants survived well in the garden among the Burpee tomato plants. Great flavor and wonderful aroma. I will be planting this herb again!"

Gotta love the basil,
July 21, 2008 Submitted bySoupAddict from Cincinnati, OH
"My basil yield has been wonderful this year, and the plants have thrived so well, I haven't been able to keep up with their growth (I know what I'll be doing this coming weekend -- making pesto like crazy to freeze for the winter!). Good stuff."

Good, strong plants year after year,
November 10, 2007 Submitted byLakeErieGarden from Lorain, OH
"I always plant this in my herb garden and always from seed I start it. I have never bought the plants from Burpee but have from a local garden center and it did not survive. Buy the Burpee seed and plant. I have gotten such strong, bushy plants that taste fantastic. This is great for pesto and so many other dishes."

"The plants started from Burpee seeds yielded strong, and healthy basil. Large leaves, however, were bitter and inedible. Medium to small leaves made excellent salads and a terrific pesto!"

"Almost every seed I planted matured but I planted way too much for the 12" pot that they're in. Strange thing is that many of the leaves taste more like licorice than basil...still scratching my head over that one."

"Growing plants from seed is sometimes successful and sometimes not for me. This basil though I have grown from seed, starting somewhat late (June), in a seed starting tray in my kitchen, then my sunny back porch (after germination). It's lovely, smells wonderful and is healthy. Now, to find a place to transplant the little darlings!!"
