Fast and Reliable!, February 1, 2006
Submitted by diymama from Mystic Island, New Jersey
"I am using this system for the first time. Last year I lost almost all of my plants to damping off, but with the channeled bottom tray, I didn't lose one! The tray has channels in it that hold water, so the plants wick up water as they need it, eliminating the act of overwatering! I started early, to "iron out the kinks" so to speak, but to my surprise, there were none! I had a lot of problems with other systems in the past. Using the Burpee system, I decided to try a few seeds each of broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, borage, and 4 o'clocks. To my amazement, seeds that usually take 10-14 days, took 24 hours! My broccoli and borage germinated the very next day, and the 4 o'clocks the day after! The whole system was placed in front of a west facing window, over an electric baseboard heater set to 72 degrees. After the plants germinated, I removed them one by one and put them under a flourescent light. They never got leggy, and now I have ready-to-transplant seedlings that have nowhere to go! (I will try to put them in the garden using cloches, after hardening them off.) It is only Feb 1st! (I am in zone 7, where the average date of last frost is around 2-4 weeks before Mother's Day.) All of my seeds germinated in the same way. I now know that this product is as reliable as the rest of Burpee's products! I highly recommend this to anyone who has had a problem with damping off, needs fast germination, or has impatient children. If you are a beginning gardener, this is virtually fool-proof! Happy gardening!"

The Ultimate Growing System, October 22, 2009
Submitted by Anonymous from Maryland
"I bought two of these starters and put them on growing mats under grow lights. I was very surprised to see how quickly they germinated. The root systems grew strong and I had no trouble getting them out to transplant into bigger pots with a butter knife. They cleaned up easily and are ready for next springs seeds."

Quite satisfied, August 15, 2009
Submitted by Iglekott
"I was very pleased with this product, which helped sprout my tomatoes. I used the peat pellets. By the time I needed to transplant, roots held soil together well, and I could pop plants out using a stick to apply pressure through the bottom hole. I have reused it twice already for other seeds. I do find it reusable, and a good value."

Good Start But Needs Improvement, July 23, 2009
Submitted by Ceten from San Antonio, TX
"Like many of the other reviews, I had great success with my seeds. They really took off and grew quickly. However, once they were ready for transplant, it was a nightmare getting my plants (herbs mostly) out of the container. How about not advertising the "reusable" part and just putting a perforated bottom on each cell instead of the little hole? It would definitely be worth the money every season to buy a new one. I wish I had a picture of my mangled tray to show."

Worst Product! Horrible!, June 9, 2009
Submitted by gardenlover from Sullivan County, NY
"the self watering mat worked great, the seeds germinated at a very high rate, BUT when it came time to transplant, WHAT A NIGHTMARE! nearly impossible to get the seedlings and starter medium out of the overly deep and flimsy cells. seedlings either got mangled, even using several creative methods (chop sticks, knives, spoons) or we had to cut seedlings out one by one which took forever and makes this a NON-REUSABLE PRODUCT. used the trays with peat pellets and had better success.
please test this product again and make it better."

A waste of your time & money, June 7, 2009
Submitted by FrankP
"This kit was a huge waste of my time and money. Out of 72 plants, I was only able to transplant 4 - and I'm not even sure if those ones will survive. The "super growing cubes" literally crumbled in my hands. I ended up going to the nursery to replace my lost plants. Don't but this product unless you want to watch your time and money crumble in your hands too!"

I was skeptical---no longer!, June 6, 2009
Submitted by PotagerQueen from Wheaton, IL
"I was very skeptical about this system until I tried it. My mother, a Master Gardener, had warned me about the possibility of seedlings' being lost to damping-off. I was very careful not to leave the plastic covers on any longer than necessary---and I also sprinkled the surface of the soil with ground cinnamon, which, I have heard, prevents damping-off. Out of 288 cells, about 280 seeds germinated and not a SINGLE ONE was lost to damping-off. They produced strong plants with good root development. I will definitely be using this system in future years and recommending it to other gardeners. Thanks, Burpee's!"

Great Product!, May 29, 2009
Submitted by melintdesr from Jenison, MI
"This was the first year I ever tried to start my own seeds and this product worked great! Seeds that were supposed to take 14 days to germinate came up in under 3 days! I was very impressed.

The only complaint I have is that the product is a little flimsy. I had to rotate between two rooms I kept my seeds in (one in the morning and one in the evening) because of trees hiding the sun as it moved through the sky. You have to move the trays VERY carefully! They bend and you get water everywhere (I'm sure they're not meant to be moved around, though). Also, as other reviewers said, it's a little hard to get the seedlings out. I have small fingers so pushed my pinky up through the hole at the bottom to loosen it.

Overall, great product!"

Very helpful, May 13, 2009
Submitted by HudsonGardenerBeginner from Hudson, MA
"I read some bad reviews, and some good, and decided to try it. The hard part was getting them out. I squeezed, and used a very thin knife. My plants germinated in THREE days. I had to transplant at different times, so I will remember that next year: plant stuff that germinates at the same rate close together.
I did a test run using Chinese take-out containers, and Burpee seed starting, and yes - it worked just the same, the root development was not as pronounced though. I transferred to medium peat pots, but it was still too cold outside. I was very happy and recommend this purchase if you want to get a jump start.
In fact, I planted too many tomatoes because I didn't think all my seeds (from Burpee, too) COULD ALL be successful. They were! The only thing I had a problem germinating was Sage and Rosemary for some reason."

Easy Setup and Well Worth The Cost, May 11, 2009
Submitted by Cricket0922 from Northern West Virginia
"This system is by far the best seed starting system I have ever used. The setup was quick and easy and the soil medium is excellent. The pellets were quick to expand in fact most of them started expanding when I placed the tray down on top of the watering mat. I let them set for about 4-5 minutes to let them draw water up from the mat and then I poured the hot water over them to finish the expansion. I used my system to start some hot pepper plants, tomato plants, and sunflower plants and had nearly 100% germination rates. The seeds germinated in about half the time that the seed packages said to expect. I am very happy with this product and will be purchasing a second system for next year's garden. This system may cost a little more than most other "peat pellet" systems, but it is well worth the added cost."

Area for improvement, May 10, 2009
Submitted by jakej
"I agree with all of the people who have said the plants are way too hard to get out of the cells. The cells need to be heavier, cut into 4 by 4 sections or have a tool to push through the bottom. My wife has done a good deal of seed starting and was about to airmail the flat across the garage in frustration. You guys need to improve this. Other than that it worked as adverstised."

Good seed starting system, April 14, 2009
Submitted by AppalachianDoc from Southern Appalachia
"I just bought a big stand with grow lights suspended over racks for the little plants. I have three other kinds of seed starting systems. The Burpee systems have good soil in a very easy to use form. Seeds sprouted quickly and almost all did sprout. I had no problem with damping off in this system. The trouble came when I needed to remove the enormous little plants, ready sooner than the seed packets had predicted. The plastic of the cells was very fragile; the plants were difficult to get out of the cells. Both the plants and I suffered wounds in the process, as did the planting cells. If the cells were just a bit sturdier, the system would be much improved. I would also suggest that Burpee add a 6" dowel to each kit to help users remove the plants as painlessly as possible. It's sad to see a carefully nurtured little plant damaged during removal from its first home."

OMG!!!, April 14, 2009
Submitted by BeautifulBlossom from Midwest
"I wish I had known about this last year! I've always wanted to grow a garden like my grandmother has all my life. Last year by the time I decided to start, it was too late in the season.

This year, I got an early start and saw this while I was doing my shopping. Decided it would be a wise investment. Boy was it! I planted my seeds Wednesday afternoon and saw my green beans coming up before I went to bed Wednesday night. I thought I was seeing the seeds and just hadn't buried them deep enough, so I recovered them. Thursday morning, there they were again. Covered them Thursday morning and again Thursday evening, and there they were to meet me Friday morning!

By Sunday morning (Easter) I had 35 sproutlets! Some already over an inch high! Sunday evening I counted 71, Monday evening, 132!

It's been 6 days and I already need to consider transplanting for further indoors growing as it's still too early for them to go outside and some of them are already 6 and 7 inches tall!

Amazed and Impressed is all I can say!

One thing I'll do differently next year is only plant 1 seed in each space. Since they're growing so fast, I'm sure the roots are competing for nourishment.

Works Great!, April 9, 2009
Submitted by Eleanor from Boulder, CO
"I am a new gardener-just got a place with a yard! I live in Colorado in Zone 4 or 5 and got a late start on starting seeds (thyme, basil, and tomatoes) which made me a little nervous. I needn't have worried! The packages say germination will occur within 7-14 days, and by day 4, I had sprouts! I am very pleased with the system. It seems a little bit flimsy, but works great!"

Fantastic Buy, April 9, 2009
Submitted by nurse4u from Washington, Mo
"I am a new gardener. After investing hundreds last year, purchasing plants and not having a good turn out, I wanted to start seeds this year. I purchased this item and ordered different burpee seeds. Burpee included a small packet of fertilizer in my order as a gift. The system is so easy to use. My young son loved to help me plant the seeds in each cell. We placed the green house fully planted in front of a south facing window where in got alot of natural light everyday. I didn't have to use any heating pads or other lights for my plants to grow. I had it next to a vent- so warm air was available. I also used lukewarm to warm water to fill the tray with. Within a few days we had sprouts!!! Needless to say my 72 cell greenhouse exploded!! I am out of room, and it is a little to early to plant outside for me. In fact, my plants are growing so well and so quickly that roots are beginning to come out of the bottom of each cell and onto the black mat!! I will probably have to cut the cells so I can transfer the plants. I used a a small portion maybe 1tsp of the fertilizer, diluted in 2 cups of water, and applied that directly to the seedlings about 2 weeks ago just to give them a boost and man did it. Anyway- I think I will be purchasing a new kit for next year, since I will have to destroy this years getting to my plants. Next year I will start later with my seeds. If I would change anything about it- it would be to make the cells and the base more sturdy. The cells can easily tear and the base ripped when I was putting water into it. I wish the top snapped onto the greenhouse instead of just sitting on top of it. All in all a wonderful product!!"

Watch out for the cells, April 7, 2009
Submitted by Beepers from Michigan
"I am using this system for the second year, and I don't expect the cells to last until next year. The watering system is great, even when using a heat mat, but the cell packs are very thin and the seedling are difficult to remove. The sides of the cells are easy to break/tear. The dome fits on top of the cells, not the tray, therefore the overall tray with dome is much higher than my other trays, making it more difficult to set the lights. The "soil" is very good for growing seedlings. I wish it would last longer."

Love it, March 31, 2009
Submitted by Trishkie from Elk Grove, CA
"This is my first try at starting from seed indoors so purchased this to get all the help I could. By day 5 I already had things sprouting! 1 zucchini, 3 tomato (2 varieties) and 1 cucumber.

With initial setup I followed recommendation of another reviewer and cut the system up into sections. This was very helpful when later, several things had sprouted and were being squished by the lid. Since other veggies still hadn't sprouted, I wanted to keep moisture in. So with the seed tray sectioned off, I pulled out the sections with sprouted seeds (mostly tomatoes), leaving the rest under the moisture-holding cover. Stabilizing the lid on there w/o the entire seed tray in place underneath is a balancing act, but doable.

11 Days after initial planting, I have some of everything sprouting except one sweet pepper. With everything else sprouting, I'm soon going to have to pull off the lid anyway and hope those will still sprout anyway.

Overall, great experience! I may try a smaller tray system in the future. It would be handy at this point for my remaining unsprouted peppers anyway."
