Wonderful system!, March 29, 2009
Submitted by Arielle from Argusville, ND
"This is by far the best seed starting system I have used in a long time! My cosmos came up in two days, and my other plants quickly followed! I am not sure what I am going to do with them now since I cannot plant them for another month!!! (it usually takes me 10 or so days to get them up and growing). The only tricky part is the cubes, I figured out if you add alittle water at first so they puff and then go back over with alot of water, they do not tip or float and work perfectly! I am not using the plastic top since I fear mold, and it is working perfect without. Highly recommended!!"

Remarkable Results, March 25, 2009
Submitted by Kell from Fredericksburg, VA
"Ok, first let me say after reading the other reviews I was skeptical about the quality of the materials so I asked Burpee. They recommended using a pencil or something to push the seedlings up through the bottom. Good enough for me I ordered. My wife and I planted our seeds following the instructions that came with the kit. I recommend using something to hold the pellets flat while they expand otherwise they float, turn sideways and expand that way becoming useless. Ok so we lost one pellet before we figured it out. The rest were fine and our seeds went in nicely. We live in an apartment and grow our garden on our balcony so space is limited. We planted the following vegetable seeds, Big Beef Tomatoes, Broccoli, Biker Billy Jalapenos, Sweet Bell Peppers, Italian Ice Tomatoes, Sweet 100 Tomatoes, Red/ Yellow Mix Pear Tomatoes. We also planted the following flower seeds, Phlox, Empress of India, Crystal Palace Lobelia, Butterfly Mix, and a couple more I am forgetting. We placed the seed filled kit in front of a window in the bedroom for maximum sunlight. In the past most of the seeds I have planted take about 7-10 days to sprout, not the case with this system, most of the seeds had began to sprout within 5 days a couple started after 3 days. I have never had such a successful start to my seeds, everything sprouted. Ok so we were really happy and excited to have our little guys growing like mad. Up to this point we love our growing kit. Then it came time to move the faster growing seedlings out of their cells. We proceeded to carefully lift the trays after separating it into two 36 cell trays. We followed the instructions and used a Sharpie marker to push up thru the bottom since it was just large enough to fit. Failure is the best word. After a lot of nearly killing some of the seedlings by attempting to work them out and pushing up thru the bottom with a marker we decided to cut them out. Now they are all in their big pots and looking great. So overall what is my opinion of this product? Outstanding, based on germination and growth of the seedlings. The cells are not really reusable in my opinion so next year I will buy the peat starter pots and set them on top of my Burpee kit mat and tray. They can be cut and planted as is without damaging the plant and will still soak up the water as intended. Would I buy it again? Yes. I am very happy with it even though I had to cut out the seedlings. My wife and I are really looking forward to an outstanding garden this year."

Great System!, March 14, 2009
Submitted by Anonymous from Southern Oregon
"I have used the standard seed trays for years and suffered through mixed and varied results. So, this year I purchased 2 of the Ultimate Grow Systems with the intent on conducting my own experiment. Well THANK YOU BURPEE! This is what has happened.

I started two 72 cell systems and two 60 cell "standard trays". This is day 3 and I have broccoli up and standing about an inch tall, mustard, collard, pok choy, peas and a host of others popping up in the Ultimate grow but only 2 little weak looking spinach are peeking in the "other" trays.

I have never had just a great fast seed start. I love this system and using the Sea Magic in my trays makes these new veggie babies looks fabulous.

I will use this system again next year and add two more systems to next year's seed order."

Pellets don't rise, March 12, 2009
Submitted by august
"Over half the pellets did not rise correctly. When you add water they float on their side and expand horizontally instead of vertically. This means they jam themselves into a lump at the bottom. Repeated prodding doesn't help.

The way to do it would be to hold each pellet in place with a chopstick while adding water. This was not suggested in the instructions."

not so good, March 4, 2009
Submitted by grammasusie from Idaho
"I'm disappointed in this product. I thought the idea of having a water source under the tray to be delivered by the mat was a good idea.. well.. mine didn't work very well.
Luckily I discovered before it was too late that some of my little plant cells were dry. So I just removed the mat and riser tray and am using it the old fashioned way."

It Works as Advertised, February 28, 2009
Submitted by pcthiker from Oakland, CA
"Pros: it works. Seeds germinate quickly. No over-watering. Almost uniform seedling growth.

Cons: (1)The plastic "egg carton" is flimsy. I solved this problem by putting the whole system, including heating pad, on a tray. (2) The growing pellets can turn over when being moistened the first time, and they jam into the holes. I had trouble cleaning the pellets from their holes after transplanting.

Bottom line: No system is perfect. This is the best I have used."

"After having very disappointing results with my seed starting efforts last year, I purchased 4 of the Ultimate Growing Systems this year, largely based on the reviews, which were very positive. To date I have started broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, spinach, dill and a few tomatoes (couldn’t resist / wanted to have a few with fruit already on them when the ground warms up). I have been totally satisfied with the system. My germination rates are over 90% in everything except the spinach (44%), and the sprouts started showing up after just 4 days! I am planting a large garden this year, hoping to avoid buying any tasteless grocery store vegetables at all, if possible, and I simply would not be able to afford that many transplants, so the ability to start between 500 – 600 transplants with good success is critical. I have reordered more pellets for the next round of starts and even ordered another ultimate system for my daughter, who wants to grow lots of herbs. This system works! No damp-off, no problems, just good results. The day my order arrived there was 4 inches of snow covering my garden; when the first seedlings appeared, there was 7 inches. What a great feeling to see my seeds sprouting, even though I could do nothing in the garden!!! I placed my trays in a South facing window and installed a cheap “growth enhancing” florescent bulb light 7 inches above the trays, which I got at the local discount store for $7 and I give them 16 hours of light a day with the lamp. I also placed a heater near the trays and monitored the temperature in the window to keep it between 65 and 80 degrees night and day. I could not be any more satisfied, I heartily recommend this product!!"

Best of all systems, February 7, 2009
Submitted by hannibalnana
"I have read the other reviews and am surprised. I have used my system for 3 years and have had no tears or breakage in any of the plastic parts. The plants pop out with help, but no damage to the plant. I have a hobby greenhouse and 15 Ultimate Growing Systems. Everyone raves about how big and healthy my plants are at planting time and how quickly they take off once planted outdoors. The planting medium is great for the seeds and the plants. When the time comes that I need more I will not hesitate to buy more."

"I would not recommend this product as it is shipped from a third party supplier(took 4 weeks to get it), is flimsy, cracks easy and is hard to get the plants out without damaging the unit. Burpee bombed on this one as it's surely a dud!"

What a system!, January 11, 2009

"I went ahead and gave it 5 leaves because of there is no need to constantly monitor water. But the cheap brown plastic is only a one time shot. Too bad. But I think it would drive the price up if it was actually reusable! But this works great!"

"THIS ITEM IS CONVENIENT BUT FOR THE PRICE ONE COULD DO AS WELL WITH A PAN, A TOWEL AND PEAT POTS. HOWEVER, WHEN IT CAME TO FREEING THE YOUNG PLANTS FOR TRANSPLANTING IT WAS VERY INCONVENIENT. THERE MAY BE A SIMPLE REMEDY, BUT I DON'T KNOW IT. I LOST SEVERAL STARTERS."

Great Performer, December 31, 2008
Submitted by MorkRider from Central Valley, CA
"I purchased this system to put under a grow light and had excellent success starting seeds indoors for transplanting. Like the other reviewers, seeds germinated QUICKLY and the plants did really well. They can get ahead of you if you start too early so be prepared! The only thing I do not like about this system is the big unweildly size (I got a 72). Because it's large and not rigid, it's hard to handle. I cut mine apart. I'd like to see a little sturdier and smaller cell sections that fit into the tray...then I would call this PERFECT!"

Superior Seedlings, but a bit Pricey, November 25, 2008
Submitted by ChristyACB from Norfolk, Virginia
"I purchased this kit for the 2008 season along with all the other standard kits and there is no doubt that this one is better than the rest! It really is the self watering mat that makes the difference and I wish that Burpee would sell those alone to convert other types of starters we all have lingering about in our garden shacks.

The kit can be re-used, at least from the watering mat down, with any other type of seedling rack commercially available and that helps to amortize the price a bit.

The self-watering feature allows each plant to take what it needs and seems to really even the playing field for more delicate starts.

I do like the product and will continue to use it, however I do wish they would offer just the mat or mat and stand as a stand-alone product."

Fantastic Results!!!, July 21, 2008
Submitted by Latransplant from Decatur, Alabama
"I have never had much luck with seed starting until using this system. My mesclun salad mix literally sprouted overnight and the pumpkin seeds popped up in 3 days time! The conditions created for germination are as perfect as anyone could ask for. When I started the kit, I did not realize I should have placed the tray in its desired location before I added water, as stated in the instructions. Luckily, it was not at all difficult to move. Right now I am in the process of shopping for my next crop of seeds to plant...thanks Burpee!!!"

Excellent growing Kit!!, June 3, 2008
Submitted by tarnee19 from Hamilton, NJ
"I am a first time buyer from burpee, and i got this kit for the seeds that i got from them, mainly vegetable ones.

It took only 2 days to germinate all my seeds, not a single one of them was missed. The soil pellets did an excellent job.

I had to call for a replacement for the tray as it was leaked most probably due to shipping and I can say that they have the best customer service. I definitely recommend buying products from burpee and Ive been doing it already.

THANKS BURPEE!!"

Burpee Ultimate Growing System, April 25, 2008
Submitted by doed from Central Massachusetts
"This is my first year using the ultimate system. I have used many in the past, but this far surpasses any. I have had my plants growing for 4 weeks. They are lovin life. Before going away for a week, I made sure the tray was filled with water. When I came home, the plants were as happy as could be and STILL MOIST!
I would recommend it highly to anyone that has a love for gardening and wants the seeds to flurish and grow into wonderful plants."
