"These large, luscious beauties offer old-fashioned tomato taste for sandwiches and salads. They remain firm when ripe, so you can slip a slice into your favorite summer sandwich, BLT or burger and savor the rich, succulent, sweet taste. Vigorous but compact plants load up with dozens of fruit at a time, continuing for many weeks from midsummer to early fall. Wt: 10 oz. Indeterminate. 70 days. Sorry, plants CANNOT be sent to AK, AZ, CA, HI, or NV. Plants ship in spring at proper planting time. ( click here for shipping schedule ) "

I won't grow these again,
September 15, 2009 Submitted bykevin from Redwood City, CA
"I mistakenly ordered these seeds, but thought it would be o.k. The seeds all sprouted and looked very healthy. I got a nice batch of average-tasting tomatoes (not a strong tomato flavor), but I've had to throw out dozens since. They turned white (a friend said they were sunburned) and then rotted. Most cracked as well (I only watered them once a week). Maybe they aren't the best tomato for northern California???"

Large and Delicious,
August 25, 2009 Submitted byOrangeMonkeyee from Northwest Indiana
"I sprouted all thirty of my seeds from the packet and gave a few plants to both my sisters. I planted 17 plants in my garden. I let a few of them grow with very little fertilizer and they put out about 6-8 nice tomatoes at a time while the ones I fed tomato food loaded up with about 4-5 clusters of 3-6 tomatoes. Needless to say I've been picking five to six succulent tomatoes every day for the last two weeks and the plants are setting more fruit and continuing to ripen the existing clusters. One plant I fed about three times as often as the others and one of the tomatoes is about the size of two softballs stuck together. The taste is out of this world. You'll never eat a store bought tomato after these. This is the tomato to grow if you like gourmet BLTs."

Terrific Tomatoes,
March 28, 2009 Submitted bykweenstefanny from Santa Rosa
"I try to grow at least 4 different varieties of tomato in my garden each year. Steak Sandwich has to be one of the best I've ever grown over many years. They produced delicious large fruits with exceptional texture and flavor. Perfect for a sandwich or hamburger - or just eat it like an apple! One note of caution - this tomato is not for wimpy tomato cages - I had heavy duty 4 foot cages for mine last year and still ended up with so much fruit that they collapsed and had to be propped up!"

THIS is why I plant tomatoes.....,
August 27, 2008 Submitted bySalsaMom
"I thought this tomato was outstanding. I've gotten such a bumper crop out of just three plants (planted in Earth Boxes). The huge, perfectly round fruits are rosy pink. The taste is awesome...syrupy, but not too sweet. And OMG...so meaty with a taste that lingers long after. I am so happy with this variety and will plant again next year.
Now if you excuse me, I've made myself a bit hungry for one....."

Not what I expected, but,
August 18, 2008 Submitted byYardner from Southern Ohio
"It was actually pink but what does the color matter. It had good flavor but no where near the best. It was meaty which is good for canning and salsa. The biggest draw back was that it cracked even when watered evenly. I wouldn't be afraid to try it but I don't plan on using it again. I would select BrandyBoy before using it again."

Sweet Beefsteak,
June 20, 2008 Submitted byBaldStoneWall from Valley Stream, NY
"I grew container-only garden Summer 2007. My wife and I found Steak Sandwich Tomato to be the sweetest compared to anything bought in store, and versus the only other tomato grown - Patio Princess. Plants grew fast and vigorous, and fruit grew faster and bigger with selective stem pruning. Could withstand missing water for a few days, even in container (window 24"x12"x"12"). We will compare in 2008 against more varieties, including the vaunted BushSteak Hybrid."

Blighted....,

"This was the first tomato to get blight in my yard last year. Red Lightening was the second. I don't recommend either if you are in a mountainous region with heavy moisture."

Vigorous Plant,
December 19, 2007 Submitted byRhazz from Salt Lake City
"Not the very best tasting red tomato in the garden, but the seeds all germinated and grew well. The plants grow quickly and had the thickest bases and biggest root systems I've ever seen. Make sure you stake and cage the Steak Sandwich with heavy duty materials."

We love these!,
December 14, 2007 Submitted bywillyb from SE Michigan
"Last summer was the first time to grow these. In spite of a hot dry summer where I had to water every day, these plants performed beautifully. Loads of blossoms followed by loads of fruit. The plants were still covered with blossoms in the fall when I took them out. The tomatoes were delicious, I had no problem with blossom end rot or any other disease. Will definitely buy these for next year!"

blight ridden,
August 18, 2007 Submitted byjohn61
"each year i puchase many varieties of tomatoes from burpee. this year i bought the steak sandwich tomatoe variety along with 2 other varieties. in the beginninh of this season all my tomatoe plants were growing well but all of a sudden one variety started to wilt in the direct sun and bounce back when it was in total shade.the steak sandwich. see pics. now all the steak sandwich plants are dead, but the other two varieties are doing extremely well. burpee told me after a few emails that this variety is more subject to disease than other varieties, assuming they do refund my $$ i will continue to purchase plants from burpee but will not be buying this variety again."

"We plant several tomatoes (a variety of sources) every year.
Again in 2006 the Tomato Steak Sandwich plants we received from Burpee, repeats as the best tasting, most desired of the selections.
Slice one of these with mayonaise on toasted bread and no other tomato tastes like the real thing.
Friends actually request it as the one we give to them, versus the higher yield, more prolific specimens grown sise by side in the garden!
We'll always plant this variety from Burpee."
