Bad Seeds ?, April 28, 2009
Submitted by vippertheviper from Iowa
"I think I got a pkg of bad seeds. I tried germinating these twice - 3 seeds to a pot and 2 pots both times. They did not germinate and all my other plants did so I know it was not anything I did wrong."

Excellent Tomato, March 23, 2009
Submitted by CandyK from East Haven, CT
"I started my tomatos from seed and every one of them germinated. All the plants grew to nice size seedlings. I grew 3 in pots, 3 in the ground, and gave several plants to my friends. The 3 in pots did the best, probably because of the cool rainy summer we had here in CT. We had one that weighed 3 lbs 6 oz. Most were well over 2 lbs. Even the 'little guys' were well over 1 lb. My friends had the same results. I'm planting them again this year. Hopefully, the weather will be warmer and dryer!"

Submitted by Sklerd from North Georgia, USA
"At the time, I would rate myself a intermediate- advanced gardener and I tied to grow this beautiful variety in 2008, and it failed. It produced about 4 tomatoes the whole season, and with my seedlings, I got only 4 plants. I will never again use this variety again."

Porterhouse Beefsteak Tomatoes Are the BEST!!, January 30, 2009
Submitted by dcartner from Statesville, NC
"I have planted the Porterhouse Beefsteak Tomatoes from seeds for the past 2 years with GREAT success!! In 2007 when we were in drought conditions here in NC, they actually did BETTER than this past summer when we had good amounts of rain. The plant doesn't grow very tall but the tomatoes are huge in size, covers a slice of bread easily!!! GREAT taste and large in size makes this a favorite of mine!!!!"

Everyone wants these, December 30, 2008
Submitted by DougakaMrTomato from Annandale, VA
"I love to grow tomatoes. Have grown this variety for the last two years with outstanding success (have always bought plants, did not start from seed). Produces large meaty tomatoes that cover the entire slice of bread, simply the best for BLT's. Last year a retired neighbor ask me to order him 3 plants. We had a contest who could grow the biggest Porterhouse. I won with a 31 oz tomato! This year another neighbor wants to try these. I have never had as many folks clamor to know what variety of tomato I am growing as with this Porterhouse beefsteak. Will be back for more in 2009."

No one believed me!, December 29, 2008
Submitted by CoachRuss from Tulsa
"Besides the disease control, which was kind of out of my control because we had so much rain and rain splashing on tomatoe leaves isnt good, but otherwise these were huge producers. I consistently had 2-3 lb tomatoes. They make great fried green tomatoes if you get too ancy and want to pick early.. They riped on the vine if I let them."

Give a another year, December 28, 2008
Submitted by Gardenbug from coastal New Hampshire
"I was so excited to grow this tomato but this was a rainy summer here in the N East. Every tomato plant rotted that was set in the ground but the ones in pots did very well. I actually had 1 plant that gave me a 3 1/2 lb tomato. Not much flowering due to the rain but I will give it another summer and see great results I'm sure."

Tomatoe as Expected, September 13, 2008
Submitted by gardenperson from Iowa
"Purchased seeds for garden of 2008. Had a germination rate of 98%. Gave plants to friends to try in their gardens as well as my own. Excellent results by everyone. Big tomatoes, many to a plant, and well tasting. The size is what was advertised. One slice from these tomatoes covered a slice of bread for a BLT sandwhich. Will continue to plant in garden with other tomatoes I usually plant. First attempt was a success."

"Bittersweet" Results, September 7, 2008
Submitted by Helen from Philadelphia, PA.
"For the 2008 growing season, I ordered the Porterhouse tomato plants instead of my usuals, Beefsteaks and/or Supersteaks. I say the results are bittersweet because while the size and flavor of the tomato was wonderfully amazing, the yield was disappointing. As of September, out of 3 plants, I've only had 6 fully ripened tomatoes (at least three-pounders each). There are some smaller green tomatoes on each plant but I doubt they will ripen fully before the first frost. I assume the yield is small because it takes a lot of time and energy for the plant to produce such a huge tomato. I kept the plants watered and twice fertilized them with Miracle-Gro Tomato food but it didn't make much of a difference. I'm sure the extremely hot weather in the middle of the summer didn't help much either.
I will give the Porterhouse tomato it due though. The size of the fruit was as the catalog advertised. The fruit was very "meaty" with minimal seeds, and the flavor was DELICIOUS.
Even though I probably will go back to ordering Beefsteak and Supersteak tomatoes (for their yield and flavor), I do not regret giving the Porterhouse tomatoes a try."

Porterhouse, April 5, 2008
Submitted by shbeagle
"I ordered the plants to get a head start on hardiness for the Chicago suburb area and got them outside as soon as received. I was, however, extremely disappointed with the harvest. With 3 plants I got 2 large tomatoes. The other 6 were just average size.
I think I will stick with the Supersteaks, I had excellent results with them."

A fat resistant tomato, February 20, 2008
Submitted by Badbean
"I bought a pack of these tomatoes last season and out of the 15 seeds 8 of them started. Out of the 8 that started 3 plants lived past the first month or so. I ended up with one large mature plant that made it till the end of harvest. It was a strong desease resistant plant and while it is as slow grower it delivered huge, juicy, beautifully colored, great tasting tomatoes. It is a tough plant to grow with high casualties, but does deliver huge choice delicious fruit!"

Fantastic tomato, January 21, 2008
Submitted by AvidGardener from Olathe, KS
"I grew the Porterhouse Beefsteak tomato this past year (2007) for the first time. I was looking for a huge meaty tomato with great taste & I found it in this tomato. I will grow this tomato every year in the future. I shared some with my elderly neighbor & he was amazed at the size, texture & taste. If you are looking for a tomato that will cover an entire slice of bread with one slice, this is the one. They are very prolific producers. I did not have problems with getting spots on them & rotting before they were ripe."

Wow! These are BIG tomatoes!, December 16, 2007
Submitted by KAmbrose from Upstate, NY
"I purchased these last season and I had some germination issues, but I think I figured out the problem. These seeds really do not want to germinate when they are chilly. I initially planted them in peat pellets and placed them on the windowsill in my office. They didn't germinate at all and other varieties were way ahead of them. I ordered another pack and planted those, but I didn't give up on my first ones. As the windowsill got warmer, I started to see little sprouts and they quickly caught up to my other plants. I grow a lot of tomatoes and give plants to my friends, family and coworkers and everyone raved about the HUGE tomatoes this produced in abundance. My father and father in law have already put in their orders for me to grow them plants this year. Well done, Burpee!"

Porterhouse not just steak, October 27, 2007
Submitted by Utahgardner from Sandy, Utah
"I love large tomatoes. I've tried most of the large varieties offered by not only Burpee, but by others as well. Without a doubt, the porterhouse is th top of the line. Great taste, very little splitting, and it maintains the round shape well. I have received many favorable comments from friends that I give tomatos to each summer. Our growing season is about over so my family and friends will miss the best tomato ever until next year. Thanks Burpee"
