Tomato Black Pearl Hybrid - Packet (30 seeds)

"Burpee Exclusive.
A true treasure, 'Black Pearl' is two different flavors in one cherry tomato. Enjoy right off the vine, but be sure to put a big bowlful in the refrigerator for a special treat. When chilled, 'Black Pearl' has a unique, extra sweet, 'Concord' grape flavor. Indeterminate vines produce 1 1/2"", purplish black fruits in abundance until fall. A rare pearl!

Hearty Producer, but not grapey., April 18, 2009
Submitted by 7im8 from Fountain Hills
"Like the rest, this variety was a hearty grower, more disease resistant than others, and heavy producer for me too. But as others noted, the "unique" coloring made it hard to judge ripeness. Good flavor, doesn't split, but I like the Super Sweets flavor better.

No grape flavor, warm or cold."

Great Product, March 10, 2009
Submitted by moondogi from San Diego
"I have been ordering from Burpee since I was 9 years old, and the Black Pearl is by far the most successful tomato that I have purchased. Very prolific, easy to germinate, quality fruits that are delicious and are appealing to the eye in salads, salsa, bruschetta and add a great flair to homemade tomato soup."

"This tomato does not taste like Concord grape when refrigerated. So if thats what you are buying it for, you may want to think again. However, if are just looking for a great cherry tomato this one is a good pick. The vines produced heavily and kept producing. The tomatoes were a nice big size."

Prolific but tasteless, March 24, 2008
Submitted by kaivy from Carencro, LA
"You would be happy with this variety if you wanted a prolific plant. This plant has a tremendous yield. The plants got to 6 feet tall with thin stalks. My problem is that I do like a tough skin such as this one produces. This plant has zero taste. I will not purchase this again."

oh so good!!!, February 19, 2008

"Here in Tennessee we love our tomatoes! the more acidic, the better. i was very please with the turn out of these plants. At their peek i was filling a reguler sized cereal bowl daily with tomatoes, and i was letting my neighbors help themselves, and there were still ripe tomatoes on the vine!! . The taste is fabulous and i used them in most meals, they froze well...what can i say?!?.. i'll buy these again this year!"

Forget the Concord Grape but Good 'mater, December 14, 2007
Submitted by CimarronMaterWoman from Boise City, Oklahoma
"I bought this because I love grapes and am severely allergic... in 2006. I didn't do them that year though...
Started from seed in 2007. Seed sprouted well. Plants want to leg unless they get a lot of sun, but they love sun. Give them at least 6 hours a day. One of the first to bloom and show fruit, out of 15 plants, 4 were trying to produce in 1 gallon pots by end of May. I suckered them to convince them to be good plants and produce.
I planted 5 in 54" 6.5 gauge cages...at three feet between plants and five feet to the next row. Little did I know. They grew, and they grew, and they grew and they GREW. And started blooming and putting on the real fruit load by late June (Zone 6a). And grew. Did I mention they grew? I watered heavily, early morning, we tend to sunfry and windblow....
By July, they were over 5 1/2' tall and still going, the cages were sunk to 4' tall and I had to put in steel fenceposts to keep them up. And they produced! At first it takes some figuring out what is 'ripe' and when to pick. They started putting out at least two quarts a day a plant. Good size, good flavor, everyone I shared with thought the same.
I tried refrigerating for the grape flavor. Nope. I tried them fresh for the grape flavor. Nope. Grape? NO. Great tomato flavor. Not grape.
They grew, and they grew, and they fell over their cages. I lavished them with water when it hit our 'fryer' season of at least 90 every day then when it goes to the 3 weeks of 100 or more... they seemed to thrive on it as long as I gave them enough water. I would check them near dark for the amount of wilt they still had (our midday could make them wilt a little-all the better then to gently tuck and convince them to go back in their cages) and how the ground was, to adjust for how long for next dawn watering.
I made spaghetti sauce with them. I froze them. I gave them away. I took them to club gatherings and picnics. Everyone loves their flavor. Their shoulder blush makes them a nice looking tomato on a relish tray. The shoulder blush can make it difficult to figure out when they start producing, when to pick. Look at the very bottom of the fruit at the start of the season...they are best as a vine ripe, they don't like ripening after picking very well, though picking them and taking to the picnic the day after was fine.
They went up to about 4 quarts a day a plant after the temp broke in August. They produced! They won a blue ribbon at the county fair. Some of them even won a grand champion! (assortment of tomatos that I entered as a group).
I took the plants down in Mid October before the frost came; at 10-12 feet 'tall' (remember they fell over and sprawled). I started to refer to them as 'Franken-maters' for how big they got, that was the trick, the treat was the great tomatos. And they were still producing, fruit from bloom to ripe in all stages, as I hacked them down.
I will recommend them highly for a good cherry tomato, once they get in the mood they produce. They need sturdy caging though, just a post might not stand up; they also cooked reasonably well, but everyone that met them loved them. They are water lovers. They do not like windscald, protect them from prevaling strong winds. They also tended to irritate my arm some when I reached in to pick the day's yield. Long sleeve and light glove became manditory or I would itch after harvesting. Seed or plant, I recommend this one as a 5' radius plant and serious caging with a steel post to hold it up. It looks ridiculous when you plant it. 3-4 months later it won't. Hunting for the production can be interesting too, like finding easter eggs. Keep them off the ground else the fruit will rot very fast. You could prune this one as it starts to produce well, pinch and trim, but it will be happier as a larger plant.
Out of the 12 varieties I tried for 2007, this one is a repeat. It's not a real 'first producer' though it'll try very early, but it will come in after your early varieties (Early Girl, Fox Cherry, Better Boy beat it too) and stay past your late season (Ferderline, Brandywine, etc).
It loves it's marigolds too, four French with each plant planted at the edge of the cage helped cut the insect bothering."

High producer!, September 5, 2007
Submitted by Zeroxmom2
"I don't have a lot of experience in gardening, and i've had more failures than success.
This tomato produced dozens of fruits with little care other than watering and a spray of antifungal.

If you can leave them on the vine to get ripe, they are incredibly sweet. I really don't see a difference when putting them in the fridge.
I had been pulling the fruit off early and letting them ripen in a paper bag, because of the chipmunks who tunneled directly under the plants. They tend to eat half a tomato and leave it, so now I leave them a couple on the ground and they have stopped taking them off the vine, so we're having more success.

My daughter hates tomatoes but she says these are so sweet, she can't stop eating them.

I'll definitely buy these again, the other two cherry tomato plants I bought from the local greenhouse have produced very few fruits. These took a little longer to get going and it seemed like they'd never get ripe but it was well worth it."

Black Pearl, August 1, 2007
Submitted by Coolbeans
"First time grower of these tomatoes.. High maintenance. I live in Kentucky. These plants need a lot of water, I mean several times a day. I have these with other plants spaced properly and doing fine.
Great yeild though. Just think I would rather plant a cherry that require less work. Flavor and taste good just not worth the effort.
Cheers!"

"Was one of the best plants I've ever seen as far as tomatoe plants go. It was HUGE, had many fruits. But sadly enough Winter came much sooner than expected and killed everything. I never even got so much as a taste of one of those hundreds upon hundreds of tomatoes. Taste was given a 1 just because I didn't get to sample. Probably wouldn't recommend for the Colorado area just because we tend to frost soon in the year."

"My tomato season was unusually poor, but the Black Pearl produced faithfully all summer long and was the best tasting and most beautiful cherry I have grown. I drip watered faithfully, used red plastic mulch over newspapers, and staked to a wire mesh fence. The Pearl was still producing when all the other varieties had quit."
