Basil Summerlong - Packet (100 seeds)
"The pleasure of fresh basil-all summer long. This ""breakthrough"" basil is tasty, prolific and unstoppable, producing flavorful leaves relentlessly. Remarkably dwarf, yet extremely vigorous, the compact plants remain bushy and productive well into fall-virtually never going to seed. Grows only 10"" tall! Plants ship in spring at proper planting time. ( click here for shipping schedule ) "

A big surprize,
January 19, 2009 Submitted bymackeller from Vista, CA
"This basil grew strongly into a three foot by two foot wide bush and produced masses of basil. I made fresh pasta sauces, used it with alternatedly stacked sliced tomatoes , cheese, fresh picked leaves and basalmic vinager for snacks and used it to pep-up commercial pesto by adding the leaves. It lasted until the first total frost."

Small leaves, best dessert basil...,
May 31, 2008 Submitted byRedWillow from Minneapolis, MN
"Ok, so lot's of reviewers are saying it's not too good for pesto as it looses flavor... some say it's too small for fresh use... How about trying the best flavor sensation I've had in a long time ~ this is the perfect, small basil leaf to use in your strawberry summer desserts / frozen summer drinks around the pool. I also candied them (ala candied violet/rose petal style) to have with fresh strawberries and they are delicious. Llook marvelous on a cheese plate with micro-greens, fruit, and your fave goat cheese/brie or whatever... Read the other reviews for gardening tips; just don't throw out the plant simply due to it's leaf size... It's perfect for desserts!"

Summerlong true to name,
January 15, 2008 Submitted byluckylindy from Central NY
"We planted this and did not know what to expect. Yes the leaves are tiny, but flavorful. It did product all summer long. When I harvested them I cut the plant right back then used an herb stripper to get the leaves off the stems. I did not like them dried so I froze them. This worked out great. I did not make pesto with them, but used them in quite a bit of cooking. I am from central NY so you do not know what the growing season will be like. These did well with little care. We also have clay soil that we mix in lots of manure and compost."

"I have grown this Basil ( Summerlong )for the last two years and it has a great boquet and taste. I am an amature chef and although I grow more than one basil, this one is my "go to" guy."

"I planted this variety last year. The yield was exceptional but the leaves were way too tiny and only useful fresh. They lost all their flavor when cooked or used for pesto. They plants also bolted."

"Summerlong Basil has performed extremely well in our long, scorching North Texas summers. Highly productive. Moderate water requirements. Good resistance to pests. Leaves are delicious in salads; and I add them to other basil varities for pesto. The smallest leaves look great as a garnish for juicy slices of fresh tomatoes! Our soil is clay amended with expanded shale, compost, greensand, etc. I use 3" mulch to retain moisture and reduce the soil temperature."

"The leaves were so tiny on this plant that until I read the other review, I thought I had been sent the wrong plant! The plants themselves are very tiny, which is nice for a small space, but harvesting the leaves was too tedious."

"This Summerlong variety didn't give me the yield I had expected. I dedicated an entire box of my raised beds to these plants and while they are aromatic and lovely to look at (almost ornamental), the leaves were so tiny that they are hardly of any use. I was so looking forward to a good harvest to make batches of pesto. I had to go to the organic farmer's market for this year's supply. I won't try this one again."
