"This past spring was the first time I've planted Lisianthus. I ordered the collection with three colors & all three types have turned out to have really wonderful flowers; but the foliage on the plants is "minimalist", with virtually nothing to recommend about the plant until the flowers begin (which takes quite a while). Burpee wouldn't send them early to get them further along indoors before our relatively short season in Vermont; however, these plants are day-length sensitive so maybe that is why.
We had a stunningly rainy spring in Vermont; and with all rain all the time for weeks (especially weekends) these did not go into the ground right away. I put them under the fluorescents with my seedlings for a while (on 18-hr day timer), and they finally got in the ground Memorial Day weekend. Oddly (to me), the three colors in the collection appear to be differentiated by plant size and bloom timing. The smallest plants have the blue flowers and began blooming earliest (first lone bloom early July), and the tallest plants are the dusty rose colored flowers, with the first bloom appearing late July (these tallest ones needed stakes). Plant size does not seem to affect bloom size, as all three have similar-sized flowers (if anything, the tallest plants may have the smaller flowers, but more blooms).
Now that they are finally blooming in numbers, I suspect they will be really beautiful throughout August and that I will want to grow them again next year, as the flowers are just that pretty (worth the wait). If you are looking for a relatively uncommon annual to grow with great flowers, these should do nicely; but group them relatively close together because they do not branch out at all - just grow straight up on main stem). Make sure they get frequent waterings because they do tend to start to look a bit wilty on a daily basis if the weather is consistently hot. I recommend these."
