Salvia, Black & Blue

Hands down, our test garden's most handsome plant: tall, dark green stems; bright sage green leaves; abundant 1 ½ inches florets of the richest blue with truly black sepals just below the petals. Not only are they gorgeous, but they bloom relentlessly from late spring to early autumn. The tall, graceful plants, 4 ft x 3 ft work beautifully in large pots, but stunningly as borders or hedges.

Salvia blue and black
Reviewed On: March 19, 2006
"I bought this two years ago and have not had one bad thing to say about it. It has been consistent in blooming, as well as coming back. No problems with disease and very heat tolerant which is important as I live in the South where summers can boil you as well as drown you with the humidity. I have already made plans to purchase more as I only have one plant at this time. Would highly recommend this plant to everyone and always have people stopping by to ask about it. Marilyn"

I love this plant
Reviewed On: February 18, 2010
"This is hands down my favorite plant. It gets huge in full sun but the ones planted in partial shade were rather small. Hummingbirds loved it as well as bees. They were covered with honey bees and bumble bees all summer and fall."

Beautful addition to the garden
Reviewed On: May 19, 2009
"The colors really make a statement with all the red and pink salvias I use for my hummers. Grows as an annual here, which stinks, but it is worth the price paid. Massive flowers for a salvia and unlike "Lady In Red" which is easy as pie to harvest seeds from, this one is quite elusive, so it is just easier to buy the plants already grown for you."

Must have for hummingbirds
Reviewed On: June 3, 2008
"I bought and started growing this 2 years ago. Unlike a lot of plants labeled "attracts hummingbirds", this really does! Of all the different plants in my hummingbird garden last year, this was the only plant I saw a hummingbird check out. So much for the myth that hummingbirds are only attracted to red flowers!
Has beautiful flowers and beautiful rich green foliage. With regular watering you'll have a small bush by fall. Very easy to grow! Seems to prefer morning sun and late-afternoon/evening shade. The only downsides are it's an annual and where I live, the brick and mortar nurseries that carry it are very limited (as in ONE, but only IF they get it in!)

Best for Hummers
Reviewed On: March 14, 2008
"I garden for wildlife - especially hummingbirds and butterflies. This salvia is, hands down, the absolute favorite of every hummingbird we've ever had - even exotics.
Buy it! You won't be disappointed.

I love this plant!
Reviewed On: January 26, 2007
"Thought I'd give it a try since I was looking for this color and needed something that doesn't mind all day sun. The plants arrived in excellent condiiton. They bloomed all summer long, kept their color. The hummingbirds were regular visitors. I very highly recommend this plant to anyone."

Nice
Reviewed On: August 9, 2006
"Foliage is deliciously minty-fragrant when crushed. Don't forget to water it regularly and make sure the planting hole has plenty of organic matter. Bumblers and hummingbirds visit it regularly at my North Hollywood, Calif. location. For me it got larger than described, perhaps because I fertilized several times. Mine was 4' high by 4 or 5' wide. Upside down cone shape. Somewhat formal in appearance."

Salvia Blue and Black
Reviewed On: March 25, 2006
"I overwintered this not knowing if it would live. I have a Grow Light on some of the tropicals I bring inside and this one is doing great. Gets a bit leggy reaching for the light, but it will go back outside in the spring and I'm sure will continue to grow again this summer. It even looks good and green, no blossoms all winter, but didn't expect any...just glad it's doing so well. "
