Cantaloupe, Sweet 'N Early Hybrid

Melons do best when grown in clusters (hills). Sow groups of 3 or 4 seeds in groups 2 ft apart when soil is thoroughly warm. One pkt. of seeds will plant 7 groups; one oz. grows 120 groups. Our best tasting early cantaloupe. Ideal for short-season areas. It bears longer than any other melon in our trials. Firm, bright salmon flesh, sweet and juicy. Round to oval, 4½ inches by 5 inches, slightly ribbed with corky netting. Small seed cavity. Resists powdery mildew. Vigorous, productive plants bear 6-8 melons each. Burpee bred.

Sweetest melons around

"These melon vines sprawl across the garden very fast and produce dozens of bright yellow flowers. Honey bees and other wasps seem to love the flowers as they're always around the melon vines. I have eaten three melons already and I planted in April. These turn a nice golden yellow in the rind and prety much fall off the vine when ready. The aroma is absolutely sweet and fragrant. Just having one of these little melons sit on the kitchen table for a day makes the house smell sweet. The taste is out of this world. It tastes like candy, but better. Golden orange flesh and thin rind make this a great choice to grow. Really easy to grow, just follow the instructions and you get a bunch of melons in less than three months. I planted four vines and have more than 17 melons that will be ripe in the next two weeks with several more smaller melons."

First Cantaloupe Grown
Reviewed On: August 3, 2010
"First time I ever grew cantaloupe. Wanted a smaller type cantaloupe to grow in a container and kept the container on the patio deck. It's been a great success so far. QUITE juicy (you might want a napkin) and sweet. One could put salt on it but it doesn't need it. We're eating the first one but our grandson is salivating to eat the next one. It's on the list to grow again next year."

"I live in the Pacific Northwest where summer starts late and fall starts early. Just for fun I decided to attempt to grow cantelope outside in my vegetable garden. The Sweet'n Early Hybrid Cantelope performed beyond my expectations. I planted two hills and had more than a dozen small, delicious cantelope, each just the right size for one person. I was amazed at the plant production since we have a lot of rain, many overcast days, and cool nights throughout the summer. I kept the vine runners trimmed to give maximum nutrition to fewer fruits in the hopes that some would ripen, and they did. I harvested each cantelope as soon as it separated from the vine, and even the 2" and 3" ones were just as tasty as the larger ones. I would highly recommend this product to everyone."

Great little 'Lope
Reviewed On: December 14, 2009
"The first year we grew these we grew several varieties to see what would do the best. This one bore early and kept on producing. We like the flavor of this one better than the others also. We had no problem with splitting in this one. It is however suseptible to Racoons!"

So sweet
Reviewed On: August 19, 2009
"I'm a novice gardener. I wanted to try melons and chose these. It's been a tough growing season here on Long Island NY (damp and wet). These melons have done great however. The plants are showing some yellow and brown spots on the leaves, I don't know if that's normal, but the fruit is doing well. I would grow these again."

grew when others didn't
Reviewed On: October 20, 2007
"I've never had any luck growing melons nor pumpkins. Since I also never have luck starting seeds indoors, these were planted directly.
All of our melons (3-4 other varieties including 2 seedlings) succumbed to powdery mildew and didn't produce a thing. But one little Sweet'n Early Hybrid hung on!
It produced 4 small fruits that were so sweet and perfect for one person. Since I'm the only one who likes melon in our family, they were a perfect match.
I will definitely plant these again.
They were grown in Zone 6 in a 4' x 4' raised bed on top of asphalt and filled with about a foot of homemade soil and shredded leaves."

Definitely Early
Reviewed On: July 14, 2007
"I grew this melon for the first time this year in the greenhouse and I have a few plants in the garden in hopes of a fall crop. So far out of the greenhouse I harvested two melons a few weeks ago with plants started in early spring. Both were fantastic in flavor, color, and appearence. The melons were a little on the small side (1.5-2 lbs each), but they were the sweetest, full of juice and thin skinned. They hold their own for a few days at room temp when picked, but would not recommend for market use where storage may be needed.
Great to grow if you trellis or have small space or just enjoy eating melon in single size portions for 1-2 people (especially children). I definitely will grow again because it's of its compact nature and smaller fruit"
