Corn, Chubby Checkers Hybrid

Home gardeners should love this bicolor corn since it was bred specifically for them. It has an extended harvest time, a great sugar-enhanced taste and it doesn't need to be isolated from other sweet corn varieties. It's as pretty on the table as it is on the stalk with a nice mix of white and yellow kernels. Ears measure 8½ inches long with 14-18 rows each. Height 6½ ft. Ready to harvest in 72 days. GARDEN HINTS: Plant corn in blocks, at least 4 rows wide, for cross-pollination and well-filled ears. Grows best in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sun per day). Cultivate carefully to avoid damaging surface roots.

Chubby Checkers Corn
Reviewed On: August 11, 2010
"I tried chubby checkers this year and have been very disappointed..this is my first year growing corn and was really looking forward to it. I planted the entire package as per the directions, supplied enough water & nutrients. Only some came up and of the ones that did only two had ears that were usable..all the other ears were deformed and didnt grow. I can only assume since I am new at this that I did something wrong...so I will try again next year but maybe a different seed. It was horribly hot here this year and most of my garden didnt produce the way it has the last three years so hopefully it will all be better next year."

Not so good.
Reviewed On: June 4, 2010
"This has been one of the best years (2010) in the garden, with the exception of the Chubby Checker Corn. We planted almost the whole pack, about 180 seeds and three weeks later we have only 35 plants that have come up. Conditions were great with enough sun and water and good soil but very disappointed with less than a 20% of them coming up. We're going to get more seed today if we can find any and attempt to salvage what we can of the corn growing season. After reading the reviews on this one I was hoping this would be an awesome season for the corn but maybe next year."

Best taste

"Great tasting sweet corn. I had a little trouble with germination but I think it was because it took so long for the ground to warm up. The later planting came in well."

"I planted some of this late in the season (Sept. 1) and almost had fresh corn in November, but the frost beat me! Prolific, hardy, delicious corn, made big fat ears with lots of flavor. Canned 12 quarts off just 30 row feet."

Best Bi Color Corn
Reviewed On: April 22, 2008
"This is the best tasting Bi Color Corn I have grown. Out of the Five Kinds of Corn I grew last year 2007 in a drought the ears were as big as advertised and the taste was sweet and flavofull even after freezing. I still have some left in the freezer and it taste as good as what I cooked last summer, and this is April 2008"

Been 3 years now
Reviewed On: February 13, 2007
"After having experimented with several varieties and an avid believer of storing enough until next harvest, I have found that the Chubby Checkers variety has made its way to the top of our list. It has excellent sized ears, uniform, and grows well with minimum care. We have blanched and froze these ears for a couple years now and is almost as tasty as the fresh crop. We use pressure cooker method of course to save all the savory flavor when preparing the frozen corn. Until someone can prove otherwise for fresh/frozen corn, I am sold on this variety. I have had gardens for many a year and have no reason to change at the present. Great corn!"

"I tried this corn for the first time last summer. It is really terrific - the best tasting corn I've ever had. The plants are hardy and stout, topping 7 feet in height, and most yielded 2 nice fat ears. I got the best overall yield and largest percentage of "perfect" ears from this crop since I began gardening here in the San Fernando Valley 20 years ago."
