Tomato, Sun Gold Hybrid

Rapidly becoming the most popular cherry tomato of all time an amazing feat for a non-red variety. But when you taste the sweet/tart flavor you'll instantly know why. The beautiful golden-orange fruits are borne in large clusters. The flavor develops early, so this little tomato is great for snacking a week before fully mature, when it becomes very sweet and delicious.

Absolutely The Best Orange Cherry Tomato
Reviewed On: January 8, 2007
"The Sun Gold hybrid tomato should be heralded as one of the best tomatoes to grow. Whether you are a novice or hold a PhD in botany, this hybrid is extremely easy to grow compared to other tomatoes. The plant matures in about two months to produce buckets and buckets of super sweet little orange tomatoes. The disease resistance is adequate so you won't have to many problems. I highly recommend this tomato."

I like them better than almost all full size fruits. The plant is huge at least 6-7 feet tall or more so stake and cage and stake and cage again....enjoy"

Keeps producing
Reviewed On: July 12, 2010
"Easy to grow from seed and continued to produce 10-12 tomatoes per day per bush. This is on my list of MUST PLANT every year now. This year there were even many volunteer plants growing from the unharvested tomatoes that fell last year. Great on salads or to just pop in your mouth as snacks."

Not Only Great Tasting, But A Hearty Grower!!
Reviewed On: May 2, 2010
"I purchased 3 plants in 2009 and wow!!--Did they hit the soil like gangbusters! There was none of the usual lilting that occurs with transplants in the first few days! These babies stood tall and kept
on reaching for the sky! Mine grew to about 7ft
tall and about 3 ft across! I had to cage and stake them twice to keep the vines stable.
And man did they yield in droves!
Clusters of sweet/tangy little golden
yellow-orange balls of sunshine with big flavor!
Don't forget to add in a bit of 10-10-10 fertilizer around the parameter of the root circle of each plant once they get just over a foot tall. A bit of lime mixed into the soil before planting will prevent blossom end rot. Use a stringy mulch like cypress to mulch around plant base. Pine nuggets tend to bring about fungus and disease. These cherry tomatoes faired much better than the honeybunch kind which are a bit more delicate as plants to grow. (See my review for those)
They are again hearty & monster producers
which you will want to grow again and again
in your garden!---I know I do! (-:

"These tomatoes had an incredible flavor... they were very sweet, but in a perky, slightly tart way. It was very difficult to actually transport them from the garden into the house, because I would keep eating them. I had one plant last year (normally feeling only lukewarm about cherry tomatoes), and this year I'm planning to put several in my garden. One only produced little handfuls of tomatoes at a time, and that didn't satisfy my desire to eat them."

NO Sweet Cherry BETTER!!
Reviewed On: December 19, 2009
"These were awesome. Best Taste EVER.
I prefer sweet, and these were sweet, fruity and
productive. Ate them off the vine every day,
shared with friends ,family to rave reveiws.
DO NOT waste these in salads, too good for that.
Bright orange, full taste, plants took over a part
of my garden, so staked up to 8 FT. They kept
growing and producing till first frost Nov 2.
3 plants will feed a family daily with plenty to share.
To those who were unsucessfull or had red ones,
please try again. When you get the right seed or
plant, you will know it. Only downside I had was
cracking after heavy rains, but these are the main
crop cherries I will plant in 2010.

"The most popular cherry tomato of all time?
My tomatoes were just smaller than golf balls, some were yellow-orange and others were a deep red, all on the same vine. They had a mushy texture and no taste. At best they were suitable for a food fight.

NOT Sun Gold plants
Reviewed On: August 1, 2009
"I purchased six Sun Gold plants, however when they began fruiting, it was obvious that the plants were not Sun Gold. I've grown Sun Gold for the past several years, and am very familiar with the best-tasting tomato of all time :-) But the "Sun Gold" plants from Burpee produced fruits that were golf-ball size (not cherry tomato size), extremely thick-fleshed with few seeds, extremely dry - not juicy, tasteless and turned RED on the vine (not deep orange....RED). Be careful when purchasing these plants - you might not end up with what you intended to purchase."

Plants are gorgeous!
Reviewed On: May 18, 2009
"This is the first time I have ordered PLANTS from Burpee. They arrived 3 days ago. I was stunned by how well these were packaged. The plants were in tip-top condition. They were still moist, and none had broken limbs. The packaging they ship these in is just ingenious.
Looking forward to putting these plants in the garden and seeing what kind of yield I get.
I thought the plants were a good size, not huge, but definately healthy. I'll take a healthy plant over a huge plant any day!

Best cherry tomato!
Reviewed On: April 24, 2009
"In fact Sun Gold may be my favorite tomato of any kind! I had one Sun Gold plant in my very first year of gardening and it was so massive that I could not find a cage big enough to hold it. It produced very prolifically and kept on going until November. The taste of the tomatoes is excellent. I would recommend this plant to anyone and everyone!"

My Favorite Tomato!!
Reviewed On: January 7, 2009
"The Sun Gold are almost like eating tomato candy!! My husband whose typically hates tomates will even eat these raw. I love adding these to my salsa to give it a little extra sweetness. I live in zone 6 and these outproduce all of my other cherry tomatoes and keep producing all the way to the first freeze. The best cherry tomato ever!!"

Exquisite flavor
Reviewed On: December 31, 2008
"As a horse owner, I don't have a lot of time to garden but I have land and a lot of manure! I find that I need to be selective in my choices to do the garden any justice at all. Every seed catalog is filled with offerings of wonderful vegetables but sometimes it ends up being sales pitch. The varieties that I love seem to be Burpee 95% of the time! I am not a fan of cherry tomatoes as a rule but this is one is amazing. I found that I couldn't keep up with the harvests and the flavor is absolutely out of this world. So abundant that I give them away and the recipients always beg for more!"

Best in class-Hands Down!
Reviewed On: August 24, 2008
"I was a big fan of the Sweet 100 cherry tomato. Was is the key word. It is still my favorite red cherry but this Sun Gold variety is the best Cherry Tomato I have ever tasted bar none. Everyone I have given it to loves it. I did not think an orange tomato would be this good, boy was I wrong. Huge, super productive plants, early producers, disease resistant and they pretty much grow themselves without any intervention to top it all off. They will crack with uneven watering but that's a small price to pay for the greatest cherry tomato of all time, bar none, hands down. I am mad at myself for not trying this before."
